If you’re planning an outdoor event this summer, it pays to have a back-up plan in case of inclement weather. The larger and more elaborate your event is, the more involved your plan B will be, but you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ve got an alternate strategy if the weather gets unpredictable.
Here are some suggestions to consider for your Plan B:
1. Tents/Outdoor Shelter from the Elements
Portable event canopies are generally made from a metal folding base topped with a vinyl or waterproof canvas covering. While these are no match for strong winds, they offer an affordable shelter for protection from light rain and extreme sun. Party tents are more expensive, but provide a more durable venue that can withstand more severe weather. Tents and canopies are great options when moving the venue is not an option and cost is a concern.
2. Alternate Venues
Summer weather can be somewhat unpredictable, whether your part of the country is prone to lightning storms, afternoon showers, tornadoes or warm weather monsoons. Choosing an alternate venue can be tricky…ideally, it should be close to the original venue, and it’s a good idea to print the “in case of inclement weather” info right on your event invitation; otherwise there could be quite a bit of last-minute scrambling to ensure that everyone winds up at the appropriate place. Additionally, be prepared to put down a sizable deposit at your alternative venue — they’ll expect to be compensated (for other foregone bookings) even if it turns out that you don’t need the alternate venues.
If all this seems like too much to consider, an indoor venue may be your best bet. Consider choosing a location with plenty of windows to let in natural light — or possibly a venue with an outdoor patio that can be used in case the weather turns out to be just perfect.

1. Sprinkler Time
Sure it may be old-fashioned and at least a bit nostalgic — but what could be more fun than letting the kids run back and forth through the sprinkler? Invite some of the neighborhood kids over and get out some kiddie pools or add water balloons if you feel especially daring. Be sure to use plenty of waterproof sunscreen and re-apply at least every hour. Before you plan this event, check in with your local authorities to see if there are any watering restrictions related to what time of day you can use the sprinklers. Many communities allow sprinkler fun at any time — despite any lawn watering restrictions that may be in place.
2. Don’t Forget about Fido & Fluffy
Keep your pets cool during summer months by offering plenty of fresh, cool water and ensuring they can spend time indoors or in the shade during the hottest parts of the afternoon. If possible, exercise your dog in the early morning or late evening, when temperatures are lowest.
3. Go greener.
You can save money and lower your carbon footprint by opening windows at appropriate times of day to take advantage of cooler breezes in the early morning and during the night. If you are home most of the day, try getting out of the house (instead of lowering the thermostat) during the late afternoon hours when the summer sun is at its most intense. Use the grill instead of the oven or stovetop when you can, to avoid warming up the house through ambient heat.
4. Find cooler alternatives.
If the only time you’re able to exercise is during the hot part of the day, hit the gym or powerwalk your local mall. Take the kids to the library or run errands during those hottest afternoon hours instead of playing outside, and remember to bring plenty of fresh water to keep everyone hydrated.
